چکیده

By analyzing aircraft measurements of individual drop sizes in clouds, we have shown in a companion paper (Knyazikhin et al., 2004) that the probability of finding a drop of radius r at a linear scale 1 decreases as ID(’’ where 0 <D(r) 5 1. This paper shows striking examples of the spatial distribution of large cloud drops using models that simulate the observed power laws. In contrast to currently used models that assume homogeneity and therefore a Poisson distribution of cloud drops, these models show strong drop clustering, the more so the larger the drops. The degree of clustering is determined by the observed exponents D(r). The strong clustering of large drops arises naturally from the observed power-law statistics. This clustering has vital consequences for rain physics explaining how rain can form so fast. It also helps explain why remotely sensed cloud drop size is generally biased and why clouds absorb more sunlight than conventional radiative transfer models predict.

Small-Scale Drop-Size Variability: Empirical Models for Drop-Size-Dependent Clustering in Clouds

By analyzing aircraft measurements of individual drop sizes in clouds, it has been shown in a companion paper that the probability of finding a drop of radius r at a linear scale l decreases as l, where 0 D(r) 1. This paper shows striking examples of the spatial distribution of large cloud drops using models that simulate the observed power laws. In contrast to currently used models that assume...

A Missing Solution to the Transport Equation and Its Effect on Estimation of Cloud Absorptive Properties

Most of the existing cloud radiation models treat liquid water drops of a variety of sizes as an ensemble of particles. The ensemble approach assumes that all drop sizes are well represented in an elementary volume, and its scattering and absorbing properties can be accurately specified through the use of the drop size probability density distribution function. The concentration of large drops,...

Small-Scale Drop Size Variability: Impact on Estimation of Cloud Optical Properties

Most cloud radiation models and conventional data processing techniques assume that the mean number of drops of a given radius is proportional to volume. The analysis of microphysical data on liquid water drop sizes shows that, for sufficiently small volumes, this proportionality breaks down; the number of cloud drops of a given radius is instead proportional to the volume raised to a drop size...

Parametric Study of Fuel Vapor Concentration Distribution Due to Vaporization of Fuel Droplets in Free Atmosphere

The growth of a two-phase cloud of a liquid fuel in a stagnant atmosphere is studied using computational fluid dynamic techniques. In order to predict the danger and hazard of such cloud in open atmosphere it is very important to determine the fuel concentration in the cloud, especially in the far field region from the fuel reservoir. The results show that with omission of droplets break up...

Modification of aerosol mass and size distribution due to aqueous-phase SO2 oxidation in clouds: Comparisons of several models

[1] Models of aerosol scavenging and aqueous-phase oxidation of SO2 by H2O2 and O3 in a cloud updraft are compared. Bulk models considering only a single droplet size are compared with size-resolved models that explicitly simulate multiple aerosol and drop sizes. All models simulate growth of cloud drops on a lognormal ammonium bisulfate aerosol distribution, and subsequent aqueous-phase chemis...
